Animated Christmas Card

Inspiration for this animation was taken from Bavarian barrel organs, we felt their jaunty but slightly frantic tunes perfectly captured the mood in the run up to Christmas. It was created for SBW Advertising to be used as a video Christmas card to send to their ...

Polymer Photogravure

We've been experimenting with the catchily named Polymer Photogravure. Using a UV sensitive and water soluble polymer it is possible to turn photographs into relief printing plates. We are a little over excited about the possibilities of combining two of our great loves, photography and letterpress. Although we are still refining the process the initial results are very promising. ...

e-Ukiyo-e

With the onset of spring, a rather unassuming shrub in our garden has suddenly burst into colour with amazing luminous magenta flowers. It turns out to be a Japanese ornamental quince, which is probably why it reminded us of Hanami. We thought this would make an excellent subject for a series of Japanese style ukiyo-e prints. ...

(B/W)inter Wonderland

As ever we've been playing around with some weird and wonderful old camera gear we've found at car boot sales. A half frame Olympus Pen which is great for diptychs, a Zorki 4 with a neat collapsable lens and a 135mm ...

Rearrange

We've been working up at the Makernow fablab creating a set of magnetic woodblocks for letterpress printing. Our goal is to make a set of art/design tools that can be quickly and cleanly arranged and rearranged to make compositions and layouts on the press. The shapes are laser cut from plywood and backed with magnetic shims. The base plate is a dismantled magnetic whiteboard. So far we have a set of tessellating triangles and a ...

Dash for Dots…

It's all gone completely dotty in the letterpress shed. We've found little dots really emboss beautifully and large areas of them create lovely tactile surfaces. Here are some designs where we've experimented with the big dot/little dot/no dot interplay. Must dash... ...

New year… old shed

Happy New Year. We've just finished work converting an old garden shed into a cosy letterpress workshop. It features all the modern printer could need, electric lighting, a two bar heater - but most excitingly a galley proofing press, Adana Eight-Five and a small but growing collection of type. We have also constructed a Heath Robinsonesque exposure unit for creating our own printing plates. Here are some Thank You cards we're ...
